Merriam-Webster defines Gaslighting as the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time. When someone manipulates a person, a victim starts questioning the validity of their own thoughts, perceptions of reality, or memories which lead to confusion, low self-esteem, loss of confidence, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator.
Gaslight, the word was first coined by Patrick Hamilton, who named his play gaslight. The play gas light portrays an actor in a coercive relationship whereby the husband turns out to be the champion gaslighter and he disregards his wife and her thoughts as a troubled mind.
Gaslight is a manipulation tactic and it is used as a tool to manipulate another person. it can happen everywhere. In the family, at the workplace, and in a romantic relationship. It is like an intentional deception.
