Merriam-Webster defines Gaslighting as the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time. When someone manipulates a person, a victim starts questioning the validity of their own thoughts, perceptions of reality, or memories which lead to confusion, low self-esteem, loss of confidence, the uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator.
Gaslight, the word was first coined by Patrick Hamilton, who named his play gaslight. The play gas light portrays an actor in a coercive relationship whereby the husband turns out to be the champion gaslighter and he disregards his wife and her thoughts as a troubled mind.
Gaslight is a manipulation tactic and it is used as a tool to manipulate another person. it can happen everywhere. In the family, at the workplace, and in a romantic relationship. It is like an intentional deception.

Fangirling never goes out of fashion! BTS has been my all time favorite KPOP band. They keeps me alive and inspires a lot to be a life time ARMY.
And Jungkook Oppa's performance at FIFA world Cup was just another heart throbbing performance. I die for JK OPPA and his looks at the performance! 💓
I am not the fan of Football cause I only watch one to cheer lead cause i love shouting at the top of my lungs. And I haven't seen my lover play too cause I would be too busy to spare time for football game. The only best part of FIFA world cup is the theme songs played then. Shakira's Waka waka themes song from 2010 and 2018's world theme song is all i remember. P.s I was forced into watching 2018's world cup so i don't remember anything than the theme song. But I have decided to watch this years cause JK oppa performed there lol. JK oppa never ceases to amaze me. I am sure anti- army must be burning right now and dreamer's going to be most played on my playlist. Saranghae oppa!

William Shakespeare quoted, "All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts". The world is the stage and all of us are constantly pushing ourselves to live better, do better and achieve better. We enter and leave this world abruptly but we all do come and exit with a purpose. And here we are in the street of Venice, on Gomtu Higher Secondary School's stage.
William Shakespeare's plays are still cherished, remembered, and studied all across the world. He believed that Drama is an imitation of real-life events. Thus, there is a need for students to study his play through dramatization.

We often use role-play in a classroom situation to teach drama however, role-play doesn't do justice to the beauty of dramatization. In dramatization, we use props, stage, and costume and the actors get into a character of the play while staging it, giving lives to the dialogues and the book that students open on exam day.

Class XI Arts and Science students of Gomtu Higher Secondary School walked the extra mile to learn William Shakespeare's play through dramatization. They worked for weeks preparing costumes, and props, and practicing drama and were able to bring out a catharsis effect the in the audience. It was fulfilling for me to watch them shine on the stage as their English teacher. Nothing could make me happier than being able to bring out the imagination into reality.
Dramatization may sound old school, but is there any other better way to learn drama than dramatization? Dramas need to be staged to learn!

Once in a lifetime, we stop and look at all the things that happened to us. And those days are these days. The annual sports day at Gomtu Higher Secondary School, Samtse was momentous. Students gathered in school with a lot of excitement for the day and the day was all about fun! Tucked away near an Indian border and two giant cement factories, Dusty and a place that most Bhutanese dread to visit remains monotonous with rare events. However, we had the most fun day in Gomtu.

Why didn't they teach me in school? authored by Cary Siegel talks about important principles of money management which our teachers or education curriculum never taught us at school. Teachers spend all the time imparting book knowledge and life experiences which is unrealistic for adulting when the most important thing is financial management. Cary Siegel talks about 99 money management principles to live by while saving and spending carefully.
Five big lessons from, " Why didn't they teach me in school?".
1. Principle number one talks about "marrying a financially right person", meaning, a person who is a saver and not someone who likes to keep up with the Joneses. Marrying a person who is not financially savvy will doom your life. However, most people seem to ignore this most important personality trait during the courting process. The author reiterates, that money is the biggest thing that a couple fights about, and if a couple has enough money, the lesser the fights. thus, we need to discuss the money philosophy while courting a person for a marriage.
2. Principle number two, "Staying married to the financially right person", means marriage is a public affair and not a private affair! It involves a lot more than what we simply put, LOVE. And staying married to the same person your whole life requires immense patience and perseverance. Because divorce can take a toll on the financial stability of the couple. When a marriage falls apart, it will involve court, law, family, children, assets, and liabilities. This means a couple must divide everything into halves, which requires them to start all over again. As a couple, one must discuss money, monthly budget, debt, savings and etc.
3. Principle number four, "Always live below your means", meaning spend less and never overspend how much you make. People usually can't wait at all. they want to have everything now and then, whether on debt or credit. this kind of habit puts a person into debt. When we live below our means, there will be always extra money to save and invest.
4. Principle number five, "Take care of your stuff!", Parents always tell us to take care of our stuff but we just shrug it off because we don't pay for it. However, when we have to pay for everything, we realize how important it is to take care of the stuff. For instance, car maintenance may cost us a little amount if we do it monthly however, if we have to maintain a car in a long run, it will cost us a significant amount. Thus, taking care of stuff is very important yet we never realize it until we have to pay for it on our own.
5. Principle number Six, "Always have an emergency fund", Life is uncertain, we never know when it will rain on us and we need an umbrella for that. An emergency fund can shield us from any kind of situation. On the bad side, if your car gets hit and insurance covers all but $500 of it? You will need to find that $500 or you won’t be able to get to work. Then, if you haven't saved enough emergency funds, that's when you get into debt. Your best bet is to have your emergency fund take care of it.

People were making various speculation and developing various theories on Visa Rejection by Australian Government. Some say, Government is discouraging People whereas some say, embassy must have negotiated with the embassy in Australia to reject visa. These are nothing but a baseless theories developed by incompetent applicant!
The Visa rejection is on rise and not just rejection of Asians Visas but the visa rejection ratio is on rise due to so many reasons and some are course choices, incomplete college application form, poor choice of courses or irrelevant courses, long study gap, attaching unauthorized certificate, unable to show money on entering the country.
What is Migration Act of Australia?
The Migration Act of Australia says that Minister refuses to grant a visa under subsection 501(3) of the Migration Act if the Minister suspects that the applicant does not pass the character test and the cancellation is in the national interest. The character test here as per 501 (6) (a) to (d) refers to a person with a substantial criminal record, conviction for immigration detention offices, association of person in criminal conduct, past and present general conduct, significant risk of future conduct.
What is GTE?
The Genuine temporary entrant is requirement is an integrity that applicants must produce stating his or her purpose and also showing that their entrance is temporary and they will return back to their place of origin when their studies are completed.
To prove their GTE, applicant must submit their statement of purpose. The statement of purposes comprises of following categories as given below,
1. The purpose of study
Applicant will be required to write the purpose of choosing the particular university in Australia and not in other countries. one must also provide an information on the courses one has chosen to enroll. Example, explain whether the course chosen is relevant to undergraduate course. Additionally, mention about study gap and explain why he or she had to keep gap if the study gap is more than two years. If the study gap is longer, the visa can get rejected on the basis of study gap. if one was in employment, one need to provide substantial evidence.

1. High density of population
The main characteristic of Urban centers is the high concentration of the population. In rural areas, the size of the population will be small, whereas, in an urban area, the number of the population will be more and will keep on increasing over time. For instance, Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and has the highest population in Bhutan and the population in the capital keeps on increasing due to the presence of important infrastructures like the National Referral Hospital, Bank Headquarters, Royal University of Bhutan's Headquarters and etc.
The population size keeps on increasing in Thimphu as it serves the major purposes of the Bhutanese people. For instance, Royal Civil Service Examination is conducted in Thimphu, wherein graduates of RUB colleges and international colleges gather from August to December in Thimphu to attend private coaching and seat for the examination. Additionally, the Royal Institute of Management is present in Thimphu which is the famous test center for International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for which thousands from all the districts rush to Thimphu for the exam. additionally, all the major events of the country take place in Thimphu thus, the population in Thimphu keeps on increasing rapidly in a short duration of time.
2. Heterogeneity: The Urban population is heterogeneous.
The urban centers will be diverse in terms of ethnicity, language, caste, and religion, meaning, the urban centers will have people from diverse backgrounds. Though Bhutan is a unified country under the rule of our benevolent King, the country has a diverse group of people. For instance, the diversity in terms of language and religion. People speaking Dzongkha, Tshangla, Lhotshampa, Dza La kha, Bumthaps, and etc are all gathered in Thimphu for diverse reasons. Additionally, Bhutanese following diverse religion like Buddhism, Christianity, Hindu, Loveism, and Kirati is also concentrated in Thimphu.

Coinciding with International Peace Day, We had an opportunity to conduct mock drill on earth quake preparedness. In movies and news, everything looks grim and then there we were trying to contain our laughter's. We realized we shouldn't be but I could not help myself lol! I was part of Search and Rescue team that required me to rescue injured from the classroom buildings but injured Mr. Kinley Tshering Dhendup whom I was suppose to recuse was behind the crowd watching us being busy. He was supposed to act injured and lie down in the classroom but I think he wasn't informed about that. Then there is my friend yang yang was another injured, pretending to be injured and participating fully.

Nanmodol Typhoon is expected in Kagoshima in Japan, a home to 13 Millions population. Japanese has been warned by authority to evacuate as flood and typhoon is expected to hit Kagoshima shortly. The situation got severe in afternoon when rainfall started to hit hard And wind became stronger.
The biggest threat could be the rain as it is increasing the sea level already.

It always clicked in my mind, that industries, and technology was taking over the world compromising the natural environment. However, A cryptocurrency tech giant called Ethereum founded by Justin Drake is moving towards a greener path. Before Ethereum used energy as much as a small size country would do but they have designed their technology called merge that will use lesser energy. unlike a big giant company like Bitcoin will remain energy-intensive forever. The Ethereum blockchain supports millions of Ethereum currency and million worth of the dollar. it stores the databases of every transaction that takes place that required huge numbers of heavy computers that used a vast amount of energy. Now they have switched to a technology called Beacon chain which vastly reduces the number of computers needed to maintain the blockchain. Additionally, reducing the computing power needed. The everyday laptop can be used for crypto mining which uses minimal power energy. It's good news for us as Ethereum has decentralized for all ordinary people like us to explore and be part of the digital currencies.
Science warns humanity that actions must be taken instantly, to curb And prevent repercussions caused by global climate change. If we don't take action, we are denying science of it's prediction And that's when nature fires back for all the misdeeds that human race have caused.
For instance, some part of the world are not receiving rainfall And due to which experiencing drought. Now, next time it rains, we expect it to be smooth downpour however, the rainfall after the drought is said to cause a flood.

Tips to write Introduction for Argumentative essay.
1. Always remember to start your essay with the hook and then background information.
2. Your Hook must be able to grab the attention of the reader by stating a debatable statement that will create an impression on the reader.
For instance, Some say that nuclear war is the greatest threat to the world, on the contrary, Climate Change is the biggest threat to the world and has always been. Nobody on this planet is going to be left untouched by the impacts of climate change. Some say we can't afford to act. But waiting for the right time to act is truly unaffordable. The cost of the inaction will havoc the world.
The above-mentioned hook is also called the pro-con idea, meaning the statement states the opponent's idea yet takes a clear stand by stating the point, i.e. Climate change is the biggest threat to the world.
3. Thereafter, You must state a broad idea and narrow it down to the topic like an upside-down pyramid. While doing so, always remember that you need to clearly state what you are going to talk about by discussing the topic. Remember, debatable statement!
4. Remember that an argumentative essay is built around a debatable statement that creates a discussion.
For Example, Climate change is the biggest threat to the world. The sentence here becomes debatable as some might believe otherwise. Some might say Nuclear war is the biggest threat with the growing tension among world leaders or some might say changing technology is the threat to the world. Thus, the writer needs to choose a topic and word choices while framing a debatable statement in the essay.
5. You can clearly take a stand by stating your thesis or topic sentence towards the closure of your introduction.
6. Thesis statement or Topic sentence must be as clear as water and as precise and must be written coherently.
Science tells us that climate change is the biggest threat to the world as it is causing global warming, inducing irreversible changes in physical systems such as the cryosphere, changing the ecosystem, and inducing extreme weather events indicating that our climate and our way of life are literally in jeopardy. and the denial of the science means malpractice.

Where is Pakistan?
The flood in Pakistan is a warning to the world about climate change. The topic is known, and discussed but is yet to take action on it. The record-breaking rainfall in Pakistan is truly devastating submerging one-third of Pakistan under water. Although Pakistan is said to have contributed to 1% of the greenhouse gases, it is bearing the brunt of all other nations that have contributed to climate change.
What caused it?
According to the science as cited in BBC, Global Warming is increasing the temperature of the sea and air leading to more evaporation. Warmer air can hold more moisture making rainfall more intense and continuous. It is said that Pakistan received 190% more rainfall than in its last 30 years' record rainfall.
Flood in Pakistan
The world has warmed by 1.2 degrees Celsius contributed by all the nations but the effect is felt by Pakistan. The effects of global warming have not only given death sentences to the citizen of Pakistan but also have created social problems. For instances, access to safe drinking water was the biggest challenge as it leads to waterborne diseases, 1.4 million homes were destroyed and affected the lives of more than 33 million people. Estimates suggest that floods have caused at least $10 billion of damage.
Pakistan was already dealing with its economic crisis due to a pandemic that lasted for the past two years and the flood has added fuel to their injury. with the flood and continuous rainfall, Pakistani struggled to stop their biggest lake from bursting its banks as it could prove to be a catastrophic event.
Antonio is the Merchant of the title of the play written by William Shakespeare. He is a passive actor in the play and he is portrayed as a generous Christian willing to help his friend Bassanio. Antonio is willing to give all of his wealth to his friend Bassanio even if it involves him borrowing from others. Antonio gets involved in a bond with Rich Jew Money Usurer, wherein, he has to repay the borrowed ducats within the given time, and forfeiting will cause him to give a pound of flesh. His character reveals his love for his friends but hatred towards the Jewish community.
Bassanio is a young and pretty man who loves nothing but merrymaking. He is the best friend of Antonio and because of this Antonio risks all his wealth, and enters the bond with Shylock. Bassanio has wasted all his wealth by spending lavishly and now he wishes to restore his wealth by courting an heiress of Belmont Portia. Bassanio makes a good Judgement and ends up winning the love of Portia for his wife.
Gratiano is a young man but a fol. who makes fun of serious jokes and makes fool out of himself. He is said to be wild but a good friend of Bassanio as he accompanies Bassanio to Belmont. He falls in love with Nerissa a lady in waiting for Portia.
Lorenzo is a friend of Bassanio and falls in love with the daughter of Shylock. He plans to steal Jessica and ends up succeeding.
Portia is the most important character in the play. She is the heiress of Belmont bound by her father's test in choosing a suitor for marriage. Her father has devised three caskets and whosoever chooses the correct casket will marry her. She is a beauty with a brain lady, as in the play, she is also found dressed as a lawyer who goes to rescue Antonio from being killed by Shylock.
Nerissa is the lady-in-waiting for Portia. She is like a sister to Portia as she accompanies Portia everywhere. She falls in love with Gratiano.
Shylock is a money-lender, and he is hated for being a usurer as he is a Jew and those days in their time, Jews were discriminated against for existing. He hates Christians for wronging Jews and in particular hates Antonio for spitting on his face one time in a marketplace. He lends money to Bassanio and when the money is not repaid, he demands the pound of flesh from Antonio. He is also hated for being a miser and for ill-treating his servant Launcelot Gobbo.
Jessica is the daughter of Shylock however, unlike her father she is in love with Christian boy Lorenzo. She defies to live with her father Shylock and flees with her lover dressed as a boy. She steals ducats from her father's chest and runs away to live as a Christian.
Launcelot Gobbo is the servant of Shylock who leaves Shylock to work for Bassanio. He is portrayed as a comedian as he is found making fun of his former master through his monologue.
Salerio and Solanio are friends of Antonio and they are more like an audience who brings out the story by going around and engaging themselves in witty talk.

Abstract
In this digital world, reading habit has
become a rare habit. The lack of reading habits among our students is
hindering their reading skills. Students’ lack of reading habits leads to
incompetency in reading clearly and understanding the text however, Bhutanese
students are still vague about the importance of exhibiting reading habits. Thus,
this research paper focuses on promoting reading habits among class IX “C”
students of Samtse Higher Secondary school. The method of data collection tools used were observation, survey questionnaire, and interview. The pre-data were collected to analyze the situation followed by interventions like guided
reading, compiling book reviews, delivering book talks, and reader’s theatre.
And later, post data was collected to compare and check on the progress and result
of the research. The research showed that students developed some reading habits when they were given an opportunity to choose books of their interest.
Additionally, the research also suggested the importance of
using a variety of reading materials for students to show interest in
reading. Then the role of the library in the provision of books.

Reading is one of the important strands of the English Language and is an important aspect of our learning experience. Reading
in daily life develops an individual as it helps one to build vocabulary and
develops or builds one's cognitive abilities. It creates awareness of the
surroundings and adds knowledge that otherwise won’t be
gained. Besides gaining the realms of knowledge, Reading also plays an
important recreational role as it keeps a reader engaged and entertained.
Promoting a reading culture has been a major
theme in various countries in the world yet the number of active readers is
still very difficult to achieve. On the 13th of
December 2014, His majesty graced the launch of the national reading year
2015 initiated by the ministry of education. The national reading
year was dedicated to His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo's 60th birth
anniversary. The reading year was initiated to cultivate reading habits
among students, The Bhutanese (2014). However, the efforts seem to
be futile as of now as prevailing facilities of mass
media indulge people in it. Therefore, students do not show much interest
in reading.
Besides creating awareness of the importance
of reading, Reading habits among adolescence have been declining unlike in
the past. Students in the olden days freed themselves from boredom by reading books
and those books from the library were the only source of knowledge besides textbooks.
The
paper focuses on the journey of promotion of reading habits among class IX “C”
Students to make it a lifelong hobby. The main aim of promoting a
reading culture was to make reading a habit that is appreciated and
loved and to improve reading skills. During the research, the
preliminary data suggested that the majority of students lacked interest in reading
habits and the lack of reading habits among students was due to lack of
interest, limited varied genre books in the library, and distraction from social
media. As part of a promotion, interesting intervention like book talk and
reader’s theatre was conducted to instigate interest in
students. And then by the end of the semester, post data resulted in an improvement in reading habits among class IX students.
Reconnaissance
Situation analysis
During Teaching Practice, I learned that
Class IX C’s were facing difficulty in the reading textbook during the English period and speaking extemporaneously while interacting in class in
comparison to class XI Arts students. Later, I learned from students that they had poor reading habits owing to limited library books of varied genres provided
in schools. Additionally, I also observed that social media distracted students
from exhibiting reading habits which hindered their competency in performing
well in English subjects. Therefore, I conducted preliminary research through a questionnaire survey to find out about reading habits exhibited by Class IX C
students. The motive behind choosing class IX C was to help them improve
their habits from a young age. As a common saying has it that if you take care of
the root of the tree, the flowering and fragrance will come by themselves.
Schooling needed to take care of young children and nurture them so that they
take the habit lifelong.

I studied an introduction to Action
Research module during the fourth semester whereby I learned about research and the
steps involved in conducting educational action research. Additionally, I
attended a research convention in the college based on the theme “Educational
Innovation and practice”, in the spring semester of 2017 followed by a seminar
conducted by RIGGS (Royal Institute for Governance and strategic studies).
Furthermore, I also attended extensive research titled
“Finding Pema Lingpa”, by Pawo Choying Dorji in
spring semester during Samtse 2020.
Critical Friend
I chose my mentor, Ms. Pema as a critical
friend. She is an English teacher in Samtse Higher Secondary School
and she has worked in the field of research while pursuing a master's
in Rangsit University in Bangkok whereby she worked on
action research. As a critical friend, she helped by reviewing my interview
questions and carrying out interventions to inculcate reading habits
among IX “C” students.
Participants
Class IX C students of Samtse Higher Secondary School
participated in my action research as they lacked reading habits and they
were able to take part as they could read and fill out questionnaires.
Literature
Review
Reading is the ability to understand the
information or meaning from the written text. Reading takes place when we are
mentally involved in the reading materials, analyzing and passing judgment on them. Blaha & Bennett as cited in Erdem (2014) states, “A habit is a characteristic behavioral pattern that is learned and
reinforced in a way realized in every case automatically”. And then the habit
of reading is the basis of lifelong learning and if reading habits are
cultivated from an early age, we follow the same pattern throughout our
lives. Okundu (2005) as cited in Otike (2017) points out
that “inculcating a reading culture introduced at an early age among
children because reading habit developed over a prolonged period of time and an
early promotion will be able to shape them into lifelong readers” (p.5).
Reading can help in personal and
professional development however, the study showed that Reading
books based on an individual’s interest motivate students to read. In
addition, the liberty of selecting books should be given to students
because they tend to read more when it’s their choice. The research also
suggested that the library plays an important role in promoting the reading habits of
students but Social media is a challenge in promoting reading habits as it can
distract readers. Otike (2017) adds that the School library should allow
students to select books from shelves and allow them to read them during library
sessions. By doing so, the student’s freedom to choose books is protected.
Besides giving the right to select their own books, libraries should play a major role in
providing books with varied genres. Taiwo (2011) points out that “Library
should offer books of the varied collection of enjoyable and interesting
genre because it stimulates the development of reading habit” (p.9). Furthermore,
he points out that, If “Libraries provide access to enjoyable reading
materials then students can gain and improve their knowledge and
skill” (p.11). Voluntary reading will also be cultivated in students leading to the development of reading skills and comprehension of textbooks which can further
help students do well in academic subjects.
Besides the promotion of reading through the library, Social media tends to distract students from developing reading habits
as found in the research. Students constantly expressed that they indulge in
online activities and hardly get time for readings besides reading in the
classroom. Chen & Bryer, (2010) as cited in Kojo (2018)
noted that “a prevalence of social media used for private use
and a low percentage of students and educators use them for academic purposes”
(p.4).
In
conclusion, Reading promoted at an early age can help inculcate a prolonged
habit for life, and once a reading habit becomes conditioned, social media can
hardly distract a genuine reader.
Research Question: How can I promote reading habits among class IX C students of Samtse Higher Secondary School?
Research
Objectives
By the
end of the research intervention, students of class IX C should be able to:
ü Enhancing
students’ reading skills with the aid of daily practice.
ü Inculcate
a good reading habit in their daily lives.
ü Class IX “C” students
should be able to read properly with correct pronunciation, intonation, and
pace.
Baseline data
analysis and result
During preliminary research, I observed
that students of class IX “C”, faced difficulty in reading fluently and could
not pronounce words correctly. Most of the students stammered while
reading and hardly could express their understanding of the text. To
confirm the result found from the observation, I used a survey questionnaire and interviewed students. the findings showed
that most of the students of class IX “C”, lacked reading habits.
Another reason behind having poor reading habits was a lack of interest, lack of curiosity, and social media partially distracted them from reading. The following figure 2.1 shows that 9.7% of students strongly disagreed and 35.5% of students disagreed when inquired about the role of curiosity in instigating reading. And during the interviews student shared that they lack curiosity in reading due to the limited time assigned for the library period and also because of limited books of various genres.
On the
other hand, 22.6% of students agreed to some extent that they read out of
curiosity followed by 29% agreed and 3.2 %
strongly agreed. Some students shared during the one-to-one interviews that,
they read out of curiosity when they see articles on social media apps like Any
Book, webtoon, and Facebook pages.
Besides, using social media app as a platform to exhibit reading habit, also distract them from reading as 32.3% of students as shown in figure 3.1 agreed to some extent with the claim mentioned above. Furthermore, 9.7% of students agreed and 6.7 % of students strongly agreed. On the other hand, of the students who choose to read on social media apps, 19.4% disagreed with the point followed by 32.3 strongly disagreed.
Following
intervention programs were used after preliminary research was
conducted.
1. Reading
session on a variety of genres.
In every English period,
students were presented with short articles, and a reading
style with correct pronunciation was demonstrated. Then students were
made to listen and repeat it. Then students were also asked to select
their own short articles of their interest and read in the class during the English
period. Students were introduced to reading
activities to promote reading through a choice of various
books in a variety of genres. Such a reading session helped students to select
and read articles of their choice and demonstrate their reading
style in front of their classmates. Additionally, it engaged students
in reading sessions on a regular basis as all the students were made to repeat the
readings demonstrated by the reader of the day.
2.
Assigned students to write reviews on completion of reading an article or
book.
During the library
period, I helped students select books based on their interests, and during the reading period, I helped them read and interpreted the meaning of difficult
sentences and words they found. After which I assigned students
to review and comment on the books read by them in their portfolio as a
part of the assignment. These practices of reading and recording helped me study the
abstract ideas like their interest and supplemented as a proof of
reading habit exhibited. Such assignments helped students to improve their
language competency as they will be reading at the same time writing the
reflection.
3. Guided
students to have an effective reading session.
There is a variety
of books, and articles that cater to the student’s interests. During the reading session in the first period every Thursday, I conducted a reading session in the class
and helped students read and also demonstrated some readings. Students were
also given feedback and reinforcement to encourage them to read. At times, I
interpreted the difficult word meanings and sentences. Guided readings helped
students identify their weaknesses and work on them to escalate good
reading skills.
4. Book
Talk:
Besides, writing reviews on books and practicing
reading in class, I also made students deliver book talks in the class
from their portfolios. Students read and described their favorite books and
the best presenter was awarded prizes.
5. Reader’s
theatre
Children love
nothing more than acting and trying out different roles. Since children were
reluctant readers, encouraging them to play a character from a story or novel
with dialogue can help in motivating students to read. Thus, I assigned
students roles from the play and read them aloud. Students were also made to
wear props like false noses to motivate them to read. These interventions motivated students to improve their reading habits.
Students staging reader's theater to enhance reading habits
After the intervention, post-research was conducted and the study showed that the Reading
habit of students improved in comparison to preliminary research. And then
students also shared during one-to-one interviews that they started reading out
of curiosity and interest when they were given chance to choose books or
articles of their interest. Students expressed that their language competency
improves while reading books. However, social media was still a challenge or a
barrier to reading more as it constantly distracted them.

Figure 4.1 shows the daily reading habit of students habits from post-research. The post-result graph shows that students have started reading more in comparison to the past. 25.8% of students strongly agreed to have reading practices on daily basis, followed by 48.4 % of students who agreed. In conclusion, the interventions were effective in promoting and cultivating reading habits among students of Class IX “C”.
During the one-to-one interview, students expressed that the reason behind the improvement in
their reading habits was due to the liberty of selecting their own articles,
magazine, or books of their interest to write reviews and read. Figure
5.1, it shows that 35.5 % strongly agreed that they read out of curiosity
followed by 38.7% who agreed and 19.4 % of students agreed to some extent.
On other hand, 3.2 % of students strongly disagreed and 3.2 % disagreed with the statement, “I read out of curiosity”.
Additionally, students expressed that they
exhibit readings when they are curious about a new thing that they come across
in their daily lives. For instance, student no. 12 shared, “I read more when I
am interested in reading things that I like. I mostly prefer reading Korean
drama reviews before watching it”, and student number 2 shared, “I read
thriller books and comic only when I have to”. On the other hand, Student
number 1 said, “I only read when I have to, otherwise I don’t read”.
However, among genuine readers, about 6.5 % strongly disagreed that social media is a
distraction followed by 6.5% of students with similar views who disagreed with the prior
mentioned point. Student number 16 and 11 shared that they like reading on
social media since it is less time-consuming and materials on social media are
interesting. On the other hand, student number 12 shared that she read Korean
drama reviews on Facebook and google chrome. Student number 2 said, “I read on
ANY BOOK since I can find a variety of interesting books on an app called ANY BOOK.”
Discussion
The findings of the study revealed that reading can
be promoted among adolescence by taking into consideration of
their interest. During interviews, students expressed that they read based on
their interest and curiosity about a subject. When students are given the opportunity to select books or articles that interest them, they can read and
vice versa.
A graph shows the comparison between
students' habits of reading on daily basis during preliminary research and post-research. The graph depicts that preliminary research showed that
35.5% of students strongly disagreed and 35.5 % disagreed when asked about
their reading habits. However, the post-result graph shows that
students have started reading more in comparison to the past. 25.8% of students
strongly agreed to have a reading habit on daily basis, additionally, 48.4 % of
students agreed. In conclusion, the interventions were effective in promoting
and cultivating reading habits among students of Class IX “C”.
A Student expressed
their interest in reading comics and memes on social media platforms like
Facebook, Instagram, and webtoon over textbooks and library
books since it is convenient as the accessibility of reading
materials is high. According to Kojo (2018), “Social media
provides easy access to virtual space whereby students can explore online”
(p.11). However, many students shared that social media distract them from
reading. Choney (2010) states as cited in Akussah (2015)
that “Facebook and other social media websites are consuming more time of
students due to the society's increasing reliance on computers and thus,
students neglect reading” (p.8) similarly, students have shared that they are
engaged in playing online games on social media.
Limitation
and scope of future research
The study conducted could not prove or conclude about the impact
of reading habits on language competency. Although students agreed to have
improved their language competency due to reading, the study could not measure
it or obtain concrete evidence like the results of their annual exam to
prove that reading improves the language competency of students. The reason for not being able to obtain the evidence was due to time constraints as the
research was conducted for four months and the collection
of evidence requires a long duration.
The graph and tables show that most students have agreed to have
improved their English language as a result of reading habits however, due to
the lack of concrete evidence like marks obtained during their examination, it
could not be validated.
Therefore, there is the future scope for
the same research to find out more about the positive effect of reading on
improvement in the English language.
Recommendations
· Future
researchers can use observation and record the progress of students in terms of improving the English language through reading habits.
· Abstract idea about the impact of reading
on language competency can be validated by finding out the test score of
students in English subject as evidence to prove that reading helps
improve the language of a student.
Conclusion
Reflection
Learning theoretical knowledge
on action research was an easy task. But doing it in a field was both enriching and challenging. Carrying out action research gave me an opportunity
to apply my theoretical knowledge which helped me learn about ways
involved in conducting research and extended my knowledge about action research.
Firstly, I learned that Action Research must be conducted properly by
doing on time without delay to keep track of the progress. And while doing so,
we can get data and validate the data without missing out on any
details. Secondly, I learned the skill of interviewing participants and refining my research by using an application like SPSS and excel worksheets.
On the other hand, carrying out research
in a real field with little experience and time was difficult. With little
experience, I had to seek help from critical friend constantly. And I had little knowledge about the usage of SPSS and making graphs. However, I overcame
the hurdle by browsing in internet and by seeking help from my module tutor and
critical friend. Additionally, the time constraint was another challenge
as I could not find a proper and accurate measuring tool to prove
students' opinions about reading helping them improve their language competency
as the research was carried out till June before the examination and
obtaining examination results of English subject was difficult. So, I realized
that I would have been able to know and include the impact of reading on the language of students if I had a longer duration of time to carry out my
research.
