Had phones existed before, would it have been easier for lovers of poems that we are reading right now?
The poem River Merchant's Wife unravels the childhood days of the speaker in her hair cut in bangs and her husband as a little boy, playing on a wooden horse circling by the front gate in their small village Chokan. At the age of fourteen, they tied their knot, and then, she was too young to be vocal about her love. However, with her growing age, she starts to profuse her desire to be with her husband and shares her marriage vow to be together forever till death parts their way. but now that she has come to love her husband, she expresses her distaste while separating from her husband who is off to attend to a venture forth on an island. His absence gave her much sorrow that the cheerful sound made by monkeys started hurting her sentiments. The speaker also states how much her husband is in love with her through a line from the poem which says, "You dragged your feet when you went out". she also mentions about time that has passed by too quickly by mentioning the mosses which grew over the front gate that has become too deep to clear. Seasons that have changed the caterpillar into butterflies and time that is aging her but alone without the love of her husband. Speaker ends with a message that she is waiting even if it is for long a time and will be waiting by Cho fu Sa if it means they could meet earlier.
