What is Solar System?

About Solar system

The solar system is the celestial bodies that circles around the sun. Solar system is elliptical in shape and is always in motion. the sun lies in center of the solar system and the planet revolves around it. In addition to the planets, there are scores of comets and millions of asteroids and meteors.

About Planet
Planet means "Wanderer", but the planets do not wander in any direction as it has its own path or road called orbit. All the planets uses the orbit to revolve around the sun. Planet takes their own time to revolve around the sun. For instance, Mercury planet takes 88 earth days and earth takes 365 and 6hours days to complete one revolution. Planets have no light of their own and depends on satellite known as moon. The satellite reflects the light of the sun.

The planets in order of their distance from the sun

1. Mercury
2. Venus
3.Earth
4.Mars

The above planets are known as inferior planets or inner planets. They are also called terrestrial planets because they look like earth.

5.Jupiter
6.Saturn
7.Uranus
8.Neptune

The above planets are known as Superior planets. They are also called as major planets.

More about Inner Planets

Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and it takes 88 earth days to complete one revolution.  It has a thin layer of the atmosphere due to which it cannot support life.

Venus is the brightest planet in the solar system. This is because it reflects the most amount of sunlight received on it. it never gets far from the sun and it is easily seen after sunset. Venus is also known as evening star as it appears in western sky and morning star when it appears in eastern sky.

Earth is the most beautiful planet in the solar system due to the presence of water bodies. Earth takes 23 hours 56 minutes and 4 seconds to complete on rotation. and takes 365 and 6 hours to complete one revolution. And the year with 366 days is known as leap year.
Earth is lightened by one satellite called moon. Some scientist says that moon is very big to be named as satellite as generally satellites are supposed to be small. Therefore, they call the earth and moon as double planetary system.

Mars is the Red planet, it is smaller in size compare to earth, has very thin atmosphere. Mars takes 24 hours and 37 minutes to complete one rotation. it is said to be colder than earth and contains a little oxygen. It's axis is also tilted like earth. however, mars is said to have two satellite namely Deimos and Phobos.

The Outer planets.

Jupiter is the largest planet on the solar system. it is 300 times heavier than earth. It contains poisonous gases like ammonia and methane. it also contains other gases like hydrogen and helium. unlike earth it has 13 satellites. one of the satellite is said to be bigger than planet mercury.

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and second largest planet in the solar system. it is one of the most beautiful object to witness as it has a rings of disc which is said to be formed by the millions bits of pieces of rocks and dusts which are constantly moving together. One unique features about Saturn is that tits gravity is 1.0 which means it could even float on the ocean.

Uranus takes 84 years to complete one revolution. so the poles takes turn to receive little sunlight for 42 years and vice versa.

Neptune appears blue in colors and has two satellite takes about 165 years to complete one revolution. It does not contain any air and is said to be very cold, dark and desolate.

What holds the planets in their orbits?

The planets in our solar system are held in their orbits by the gravitational pull of the suns, and also by the gravitational pull they have for each other.  The gravitational attraction of the sun keeps the planets floating and flying away just like a twirling skirt while spinning.

What is shooting stars?

It is also called Meteors. these are not really a stars yet people calls it a shooting stars. Meteors originates from two source, one from the asteroids pieces and another one from tail of comets. Meteors are beautiful to gazed at yet too risky if it is t fall directly on the earth as it could cause a great damage. the meteors appears to be shiny and glows as it travels with the great speed causing a flash of light. the pieces of meteors which falls on the earth are called meteorites.

What is comets?

Comets are part of heavenly bodies. it is made up of small icy particles of gas and meteoric fragments. The well formed comet is said to have a head which is always shiny and emits light and a tail which is always turned away from the sun.

What is stars?

Stars are heavenly bodies that emits it's light. it is the farthest object from the earth. and the sun is said to be the nearest star. Stars appears to be moving like a sun and moon and if we watch it after hours to check its position, it would have changed it's position. In ancient times, when compass didn't exist, mankind used to look at the stars to travel as it gave them the sense of direction.
